Malcolm BRIAN Fletcher

Malcolm BRIAN Fletcher was born December 15, 1933 to his mother, Doris Mary, and his father, Charles Harold Isaac in Scunthorpe, England. Brian was one of four siblings; Alan being the eldest; Brian next in line; sister, Barbara Ann, and young brother David. Alan, who resides in Scunthorpe, England, is the only surviving sibling.

Brian attended the local junior school in Scunthorpe then entered Technical School at the young age of eleven. At the age of sixteen he apprenticed in the steel industry as a roll turner, a profession he carried on when he immigrated to Canada in 1966 with his first wife, Shirley, and his young son, Richard. Brian worked for Algoma Steel in Sault Ste Marie as a roll turner for twenty-five years, retiring in 1991.

In England Brian served in the Royal Air Force for two years and during that time he was a radio operator on a remote Scottish island. As a young man he loved cycling and he participated in local time trials.

Brian was widowed in 2003. He then lived in his home with his son, Richard, born July 16, 1963. Richard currently lives and works in Sault Ste Marie.

Brian met Audrey Austin in 2004 and that September he made the move to Elliot Lake. He was an artist whose media preference was acrylic painting. He sold his paintings and his wood creations in the Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, Art Gallery. Brian also enjoyed working with stained glass and made some beautiful artistic creations. He was very good with home renovation projects and enjoyed making many improvements to their home on Central Avenue in Elliot Lake.

On June 30th, 2017 Brian and Audrey moved into a new bungalow. Arthritis dictated it was time to get away from the stairs on Central Avenue. Sadly, Brian lived only a very few days in the new home before being ambulanced to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he stayed until the time of passing.

Brian’s grave-side funeral service will be officiated by Jim Graham at 11 a.m. on the morning of Wednesday, September 6th, 2017 at the Woodlands Cemetery on Ottawa Avenue in Elliot Lake, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Society for Animals in Distress would be appreciated by the family.

Brian is survived by his brother Alan, Scunthorpe, England; by his son Richard, Sault Ste Marie, Ontario; and by his best friend, Audrey, Elliot Lake. He is sadly missed by Audrey’s daughters, Susan and Christine; son-in-law, Robert; Grandsons, David, Matthew, and Joseph, and by many friends and relatives both in Canada and in the U.K.

God bless you, dear Brian. Well done, faithful servant.

George Joseph Gagnon
February 9, 1930 - March 30, 2017

It is with sadness that the family announces the passing away of their beloved George, 87, on Thursday March 30, 2017, at the St. Joseph's General Hospital. A longtime resident of Elliot Lake, George came here with the opening of the mines in 1955. He contributed greatly over the years, while seeking no recognition. He coached local sports, and took part in his younger years. He was an avid Montreal Canadians, and Toronto Blue Jays, fan. George loved nothing more than spending time at his cottage with family; and his hunting buddies in the fall. He is survived by 2 loving children, Janet (Ian), and John (Lynn); predeceased by his wife Loretta, son Kenneth (Romina), and daughter Frances (Ted). He leaves behind 5 grandchildren; Colin (Crystal), Sara (Matt), Brandi (Chris), and Frank and Harmony. He also had 5 great grandchildren who he dearly loved; Keenan and Kaitlyn, Ehren and Ellie, and newborn Jaxon. There will be no services, at George's request. Donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, or a charity of your choice, in his memory. George will be greatly missed by all of his family, and will be forever in our hearts.

George "Sonny" Doherty
February 20, 2017

It is with heavy hearts that we share the death of our dear dad, George Doherty ( affectionately known as Sonny to most and Papa to his 8 grandchildren and 2 great- grandchildren). He died peacefully on February 20th, 2017, at home with his wife Edith by his side. He was born in Tracey Mills, New Brunswick and lived 85 full years. In his youth, he travelled from coast to coast and in the spring of 1956, made Elliot Lake his home where he proudly worked for 35 years at Rio Algom. Our family came together and built a bonfire, looked through his books and treasures, some of us wore his belts, one of us wore his curling sweater, while another stepped into his cowboy boots. We listened to his music, we laughed at his quirkiness and marvelled at how in his last days, the weather was on his side, allowing him to build one last project out in his "shack". We cheered when we found that the movie reels and old projector still worked and cried as we watched a young man marry his sweetheart and best friend. Our dad chose not to have a service, he wasn't one for ceremony, but we believe he would have loved every minute of how his wife, kids and grandchildren honoured him. We will remember him as a good man who loved his family (though it was hard for him to show it), he played to win or didn't play at all, was loyal as the day is long and he never looked back. He made his own way in this world and never asked for much. His code for living was simple: learn, build, fix, save and give. He pushed against and pushed through if it mattered to him and he did his part to make it possible for one woman to work among men in the toughest of places. He was a soft boiled egg if ever there was one - hard on the outside with a soft, gooey centre - if we had ever told him that, he'd likely have joked that he preferred scrambled eggs best. Dad, you lived a long and meaningful life; you stared death in the face more than a few times letting him know it wasn't going to be that day. You taught us through example and loved us the best way you knew how. Rest now Dad, you worked so hard; we'll take it from here and we'll take good care of your friend. We love you every day with all our hearts ~ Janet, Debbie & Dana ". ..the place a man leaves is in the hearts of those he leaves behind, and in his work, not upon a slab..." Louis L'Amour, Sacket's Land Our deepest thanks to the medical professionals who took such good care of our Dad while he was resting at St. Joseph's General Hospital. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Joseph's in his name: foundation@sjgh.ca.
