Robert "Bob" Stirling
November 24, 2020
Passed away November 24, 2020 with the love of his life, Pat, at his side. He leaves us after a valiant battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Born in Oshawa, Ontario November 5, 1944, Bob lived in a number of mining towns until his parents moved to Elliot Lake in the summer of 1958. He completed public school here and then ELSS where he was active in sports and student government, becoming student council president.

Bob left Elliot Lake briefly in 1963 to continue his education at Laurentian University. While away, he married his high school sweetheart. After graduation, Bob returned to Elliot Lake and worked briefly for Rio Algom before moving on to the Elliot Lake Centre for Continuing Education. He was initially an instructor, and then progressed to vice-dean. During this time he was a school board member and undertook construction of the Quest, a sailboat which he built from a bare hull and sailed on Lake Huron's North Channel.

After the Elliot Lake Centre was amalgamated with the Sault College, Bob ventured into the business world and brought Chemnorth Systems to Elliot Lake in 1978. He later created Quest Enterprises, which became a longstanding business in the community.

The 1980's saw Bob return to his athletic pursuits, as he became a runner and then triathlete. Over the next 30 plus years Bob was seen cycling and running on local roads and trails. He promoted an active lifestyle and would take time and effort to help new people enjoy endurance sports. His competitive fire was well known, and he became a provincial and national age-group champion and represented Canada at 2 World Championships. His passion for running led to a number of visits to Boston to compete in the city's world famous marathon. Equally as rewarding were trips to local races with family and friends. Outings after the Mark Mellon Memorial Triathlon and Mackinac Island Road Race were the highlights of many race seasons. One of Bob's greatest pleasures was pushing the pace on local group rides and Sunday morning runs. His 'Stirling surges' were a frequent topic of post workout conversation. A lasting memory of the many elite athletes who came to Elliot Lake to train is their first workout with Bob. While riding the hills north of the city, they would inevitably ask themselves, "How is this guy able to go this fast?"

Bob was also a strong supporter of his community. He was an early member of Mt. Dufour's executive and served as its president. He was, similarly, an early member and then Commodore of the North Channel Yacht Club. He spent many hours with the Parks and Recreation Committee working on the trail systems so many enjoy today. He was a member of the local Chamber of Commerce and served ELNOS initially as a board member, and then as Chairman of the Board. He believed in the importance and success of the city's small businesses.

After becoming a grandfather in 2005 he became known as 'Bobob', not just to his grandchildren but to friends as well. He cherished time he spent with his grand-daughters and enjoyed watching them grow into young women.

Bob is survived by his wife Pat (Purss), sons Mike (Kay) and Chris (Heidi), grand-daughters Avery, Payton and Jordan, sisters Sharon and Linda, sisters-in-law Elaine, Carole and Sharon; along with his numerous nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his father Neil, mother Freda and sister Heather.

Bob has now crossed his final finish line, and our lives go on without him. They will be diminished with his departure, but were enriched by his presence.

A day of exercise and celebration of Bob's life will be organized once COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted.

In lieu of flowers, donation to Mt. Dufour Ski Hill in Bob's name would be greatly appreciated and can dropped off at LoBeck Flooring, Sarich Source for Sports and RL Brunet.
